You bought the speakers. You installed the screen. You spent a weekend calibrating the color accuracy on the display. But if you’re only watching 4K Blu-rays, you’re ignoring half the utility of your setup. Television reception is the backbone of a real home theater. It’s not just for movies.

The options have shifted. They’ve complicated. And they matter more than you’d think for daily viewing.

In the U.S., you generally have four paths to the screen. Each has strengths. Each has annoying compromises.

The Basics: Broadcast and Standard Cable

The Fiber Optic Alternative: FiOS

There’s another option. One that’s less ubiquitous but potentially superior. FiOS. Offered by Verizon.

If you live in an area that offers it, the advantages are concrete.

First, cost. The installation of fiber optic cables is inexpensive. It saves you money. It saves the provider money. Efficiency drives price down.

Second, image quality. The images are HD quality. They suffer less from signal degradation. Less pixilation. Fewer frozen images. Fiber doesn’t degrade over distance like copper or radio waves. It’s light. It’s fast. It’s stable.

You need to check availability. It’s not everywhere. But where it exists, it’s a strong contender.

The choice depends on your priorities. Price. Quality. Local access. Reliability.

Broadcast is free. But the resolution is low. No Dolby Digital.

Standard cable is cheap. It has local stations. But the picture is analog. It’s stuck at 330 lines.
