YouTube Launches 24/7 Music Channels Ahead of Coachella

YouTube is expanding its music streaming experience with a new feature called “Stations,” which offers curated, always-on channels similar to traditional TV. This move positions YouTube as a direct competitor to FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) services like Tubi and Roku Channel. The update arrives as Coachella 2026 approaches, promising festival fans a more immersive livestreaming experience.

What Are YouTube Stations?

Stations are essentially 24/7 linear streams pre-programmed with music videos, artist interviews, and archival performances. Unlike the typical on-demand YouTube experience – where users actively search for content – Stations provide a passive, “lean-back” viewing experience reminiscent of classic TV. This is a significant shift towards blending the convenience of streaming with the familiar format of traditional broadcasting.

During festivals like Coachella, these channels will be curated by artists and creators, offering a mix of past performances and highlights from the current event. This means viewers can tune in and discover new music or revisit favorites without needing to manually select videos.

The FAST TV Trend

The rise of FAST TV reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior. Viewers are increasingly drawn to ad-supported streaming options that eliminate subscription costs. YouTube’s entry into this market is a strategic move to capture a wider audience and increase ad revenue. The platform’s existing reach and artist partnerships give it a clear advantage over emerging FAST competitors.

Creator Rollout

Currently, YouTube has begun testing Stations with select musicians, including Bruno Mars, who used the feature to promote his latest album. The long-term goal is to make Stations accessible to all creators, allowing anyone to create and launch their own 24/7 music channel with a simple playlist. According to YouTube’s product management director, Kurt Wilms, the platform is working towards a future where “anyone can go in, make a playlist and click ‘Start a Station.’”

YouTube’s new Stations feature is a calculated response to both consumer demand and industry trends. By merging livestreaming, curated content, and the convenience of FAST TV, YouTube aims to become a central hub for music discovery and consumption.
