Nvidia unveiled its latest Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) iteration – version 5 – at its GTC conference, promising “the biggest breakthrough in computer graphics.” However, the reaction from gamers has been overwhelmingly negative, marked by widespread ridicule and concern over the technology’s potential to distort artistic vision.

The Backlash: A Collective Disapproval

Nvidia showcased DLSS 5 through before-and-after comparisons in games like Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield. Instead of praise, the response was immediate backlash. Bethesda, publisher of Starfield and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, reassured players that art teams will fine-tune the lighting and effects to match their intended aesthetic, making the feature optional.

How DLSS 5 Works: A Shift to 3D Understanding

Previous DLSS versions focused on upscaling pixels for higher frame rates. DLSS 5 takes a different approach. It analyzes 3D game elements – skin, hair, clothing – and renders them more consistently with AI. Nvidia claims this results in faster performance and more realistic details, particularly in textures and lighting.
