Nothing Phone 4a and 4a Pro: A First Look at the New Mid-Range Lineup

Nothing has unveiled its latest smartphones, the Phone 4a and 4a Pro, building on the brand’s signature design while introducing notable hardware differences. While leaks revealed much about the standard 4a before launch, the Pro variant stood out with a premium metal build and innovative Glyph Matrix display on the rear.

Nothing Phone 4a: The Accessible Mid-Ranger

The Phone 4a is positioned as a mainstream mid-range device, sporting a 6.78-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor, and up to 12GB of RAM. The camera setup includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom, and an ultrawide lens (specs for which remain undisclosed). A 32-megapixel front camera handles selfies.

The device features a 5,080mAh battery with 50W fast charging, and comes in Pink, White, Black, and Blue color options. The vertical Glyph Bar, a signature Nothing feature, provides visual alerts for calls, texts, and progress tracking. The 4a will be available in Europe starting at around €350 but will not be sold in the U.S.

Nothing Phone 4a Pro: Premium Design and Features

The 4a Pro takes a step up with a refined design and upgraded hardware. While sharing the same battery and memory options as the 4a, it boasts a larger 6.83-inch display and a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chip. The camera system also receives improvements, including a larger primary sensor (ultrawide specs remain undisclosed).

The most significant change is the shift to a metal unibody construction, making the 4a Pro the thinnest Nothing phone yet at 7.95mm. The camera arrangement differs from the 4a, and the phone features a Glyph Matrix instead of a bar: a circular array of 137 mini-LEDs that can function as a customizable display on the back. The Glyph Matrix was previously seen on the flagship Nothing Phone 3, but this is the first time it’s been brought to the mid-range series.

The Nothing Phone 4a Pro will come in Black, Silver, and Pink, and will be priced starting at $499. Notably, it will be available in the U.S. later this month.

Why this matters: Nothing continues to disrupt the smartphone market with its unique design language and commitment to transparency. The 4a Pro’s metal build and Glyph Matrix elevate the mid-range experience, offering a distinctive alternative to mainstream competitors. The expansion into the U.S. market with the 4a Pro marks a strategic move for the brand.
