Elon Musk to Build Massive New Chip Factory for SpaceX and Tesla

Elon Musk has unveiled plans for a new chip manufacturing facility, dubbed “Terafab,” intended to supply the rapidly growing needs of his companies SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI. The facility will be built near Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, and will produce chips for electric vehicles, humanoid robots, and high-powered space-based data centers.

Addressing a Critical Supply Bottleneck

Musk stated the decision to build Terafab stems from the existing chip industry’s inability to meet his companies’ demand. The current supply chains are simply too slow for the pace of innovation at SpaceX and Tesla, particularly as they push into AI and space computing. He framed the situation as a necessity: “We either build the Terafab, or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.”

Two-Pronged Chip Production

The Terafab will actually consist of two separate chip fabrication plants (fabs). Each fab will be specialized for one chip design. One line will focus on chips for Tesla’s automotive and robotics division, while the other will cater to SpaceX and xAI’s space computing applications.

Ambitious Power Targets

Musk has set aggressive production goals for the Terafab. The facility is designed to generate one terawatt of power annually, which is approximately double the entire annual power output of the United States. He also detailed plans for chips capable of handling 100–200 gigawatts of power per year, as well as even more powerful chips for space-based data centers. No specific timelines were given for either the facility’s completion or reaching these production levels.

This move signals a significant escalation in Musk’s vertical integration strategy. By controlling chip production in-house, he aims to bypass supply chain constraints and accelerate development in critical areas like AI, autonomous driving, and space exploration.
