Epic Games Cuts Over 1,000 Jobs Amid Fortnite Decline

11

Epic Games is reducing its workforce by more than 1,000 employees as player engagement in Fortnite falls and broader economic headwinds impact the gaming industry. This marks the second major round of layoffs in less than a year, signaling deeper financial challenges for the once-dominant game developer.

Fortnite ‘s Declining Player Base

Fortnite, the battle royale phenomenon that peaked in 2024-2025, is experiencing a significant drop in player activity. While the game still boasts 110–120 million monthly active users, this represents a substantial decrease from its high of over 44 million daily players and 14 million concurrent users at its peak. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney stated the company is now “spending significantly more than we’re making.”

The decline isn’t isolated. The broader gaming market faces weaker consumer spending and increased competition. Fortnite ‘s seasonal inconsistency and the ongoing (but slow) return to mobile platforms further contribute to the financial strain.

Cost-Cutting Measures and Layoffs

Epic intends to cut costs beyond layoffs, including reductions in contracting, marketing, and open roles, totaling over $500 million in savings. Sweeney emphasized these cuts are necessary to ensure the company remains financially stable. This move follows a previous layoff of over 800 employees in September 2023, also driven by financial concerns.

Severance and Future Plans

Employees affected by the layoffs will receive a severance package including at least four months of base pay, extended healthcare, and accelerated stock vesting. Epic plans to continue investing in AI tools for content creation, but the layoffs are not related to this.

The company will hold a company-wide meeting Thursday to outline its future plans. Sweeney expressed regret over the cuts, acknowledging the talent being lost.

“At Epic, we pride ourselves in only hiring the industry’s best, so it is very painful to part with so many talented people.”

The situation highlights how quickly market dominance can shift in the gaming industry. Fortnite ‘s decline underscores the need for constant innovation and adaptation to maintain player engagement in a crowded digital landscape.
